Following on from Cooky and my discussion on 'What is normal' thread, this thread is for discussing race and ethnicity, and what makes people foreign.
For example. A couple, (family friends) recently adopted a Chinese girl, only a couple of months old, as they are unable to have children of their own.. They are caucasian, and have lived in NZ their whole lives. Their child, Lara* is Asian. BUT. She will grow up in a white household, eat white food, (take this seriously, folks) speak fluent English, not Chinese, have no accent, and such.
IsLara a New Zealander or a foreigner?

I take it she'll have a passport stating she's a citizen of New Zealand so I'd say New Zealander.

But, if she was born in China, she would have had to get a Chinese passport to leave China, because she didn't have a pre-existing New Zealand passport. You can only get a passport from the country you are originally in (i.e. An English passport in England, an Australian passport in Australia)

Yes but if she's been adopted and is living in New Zealand then when she gets a passport it'll be a New Zealand one. Plus to start with she'll probably be put on her adoptive parent's passport anyway.
Besides she'll grow up in New Zealand so she'll fit in to that society and its norms.

But if she looks Asian, what if she were prejudiced as an Asian, and most people, (not me because I am not like that thankfully) treated her as they would treat someone who was an outsider because of the way they talk and stuff?

well firstly you should not treat an 'outsider' (sounds like you're In a cult or something) any diffrent from an 'insider'
but apart from that I would say it would depend on personal opinion

I think if she grows up in New Zealand that she won't talk or behave any differently from any other New Zealander. In most people's eyes, especially those she grows up with she'll be just like them. So it would only be prejudiced people who don't know her that would treat her any differently.

I concede. I just like arguing mostly. She's 5 now, i have talked to her. She doesn't have any sort of accent.

I think that if she was born to an Asian family, then she would be Asian.
I am born English but I am moving to Spain soon. I will become a citizen but I will still be English even though for the rest of my childhood I will be brought up over there!

*rolls eyes* right. Why don't you just get a laptop, and carry it around everywhere using google translator!

Because I can't afford a laptop! And it doesn't always work. Plus I could be there for the rest of my life - I don't want to be like some stupid Brit on holiday! They seriously annoy me!
